Maths
"Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers." Shakuntala Devi
At Holywell Primary School we follow the National Curriculum and use the White Rose scheme of work to scaffold and enrich the delivery of this. This ensures the most effective challenge and access for all children across our school. We are committed to ensuring every child develops an understanding and love of maths, whilst developing the necessary skills to progress successfully.
Our Maths curriculum uses a problem-solving approach to underpin all areas of maths – for all children. We follow the NCETM 'five big ideas' in all maths lessons and units of work:
During each lesson we prioritise the mastery of conceptual Maths understanding through the use of real life or everyday problems as children explore and investigate. Communication is key as they work alongside peers to reason, explain and justify their thinking using mathematical vocabulary. Teachers carefully plan open-ended, challenging questions which enable our children to make connections, identify patterns and draw conclusions about Mathematical concepts and problem-solving. Misconceptions are addressed as they arise and teachers actively engage children in proving their ideas.
Children across the school are supported and challenged to learn vital mathematical knowledge through weekly challenges, ranging from number bonds, times tables and arithmetic. These are encouraged to be worked on at home through regular practise and online programmes.
ASPIRATIONS FOR THE FUTURE
Pupils develop an understanding of how subjects and specific skills are linked to future jobs.
Here are some of the jobs pupils could aspire to do in the future as a Mathematician:
- Chief Test Pilot
- Automotive Engineer
- Astronaut
- Land Surveyor
- Civil Engineer
