Personal Development

At Holywell, Personal Development is rooted in our core values: Readiness, Respect, Resilience, and Responsibility. These values are woven throughout everything we do—our curriculum, assemblies, interactions with pupils and colleagues—and are visibly displayed across the school. They form the basis of how we recognise, reward, and celebrate positive behaviour. We aim to support pupils in becoming confident, resilient, independent individuals with the strength of character needed for their future lives.

Every member of our school community belongs to one of our houses, each named after a major English river: Mersey, Severn, Thames, and Trent. Our classes are named after well‑known Thames barges, reflecting the importance of the estuary in Upchurch’s history.

Our pupils are encouraged to use their voices and take the lead on their ideas, contributing positively to school life through the school council, house captain roles, class monitor responsibilities, and even by organising their own events and performances.

Children’s enrichment experiences are both contextual and progressive. Our personal development offer teaches essential skills and provides opportunities to visit a wide range of places and events. This ensures pupils are prepared for the next steps in their educational journey, equipped with age‑appropriate life skills, and knowledgeable about how to keep themselves safe in a rapidly changing world.

These experiences align with our curriculum plans across the year and build coherently on children’s skills from EYFS to Year 6. Ultimately, we want our pupils to be confident, resilient, and independent, developing the character and skills they need to thrive when they leave our school.
